Houston Florist Creates Stunning Sustainable Floral Installation at The Ranch-1988
If you live in Texas, then you may have noticed this amazing bright golden yellow flora growing along sides of the road and masses growing in untouched fields. It shows off the most on breezy sunny days, billowing and swaying creating such a mesmerizing ripple like movement like an ocean of yellow fluff enticing you in.
In case you didn’t know, this brilliant and towering native plant is called Solidago, also commonly referred to as “Golden Rod.” It is a staple in most floral shops, but the type grown for cut flower production is a bit different than the perennial stuff that grows wild. It is often gets a bad wrap because it comes to maturity around the same time as ragweed, which is the actual culprit for your itchy eyes and sneezing. So while many mow this lovely native down before it can show off, I chose to give her a showstopper moment.
This is something I have always wanted to do, so this year I just went for it! My husband and I had been out scouting spots to forage for a few weeks prior, keeping an eye out for peak maturity so the yellow really popped. Finally it was ready and all I needed now was the setting. I knew it needed to be outdoors, mainly for bug reasons, if you have ever foraged for anything then you know what I mean. But I also wanted a setting that felt natural and where the solidago would act as part of the landscape. I wanted to sun to shine off of the bright gold and I wanted to see shadows and depth. It didn’t take me long to find the perfect spot, The Ranch-1988.
From the million dollar sunset view to the pasture that goes on as far as the eye can see, there is no shortage of backdrops and photo-ops at this gorgeous Texas ranch. The very first time I saw this space and met the lovely people who own and run it, my mind was flooded with inspiration. The possibilities of this one-of-a-kind space are endless.
One of the many focal points at The Ranch-1988 is this stunning double-sided outdoor stone fireplace that serves as an entry to a beautiful pergola. I knew this was where I wanted to create a huge visual impact to enhance the natural beauty of both the fireplace and the Solidago. As it turns out, it was a perfect pairing.
This is just the first of many amazing things to come! Thank you so much for following along on my floral journey and for the tremendous amount of community support I have been shown thus far. Like I have said before, I could not be here creating and growing if it were not for all of you!
xx,
Meagan
